I am in Scotland with my cousins and I am planning to visit Loch Ness tomorrow (to see if I can spot the Loch Ness Monster!).

I love playing chess with my friends so when I heard there was a really old chess set at the Museum in Scotland I had to take a look. They say the chess pieces probably came from Norway, about AD 1150-1200.

The chess pieces are made of walrus ivory and whales’ teeth in the forms of seated kings and queens, mitred bishops, knights on their mounts, standing warders and pawns in the shape of obelisks.They were found in Scotland around 1831, the pieces are still in excellent condition and they don’t seem to have been used much at all.

Of the 93 pieces, 11 pieces are in Edinburgh at the National Museum of Scotland, and 82 are in the British Museum. They looked amazing!

Just to let you know I am heading up to the Scottish Highlands tomorrow, I am going on a really long trek and I won’t have access to the internet for a while! So I will have to chat to you in a few weeks time and tell you all my stories.

Some interesting facts about The New Forest in England……

The New Forest pony is now a recognised breed of pony, but it comes originally from Welsh ponies who breed with other ponies such as Highland, Exmoor and Dartmoor. Did you know ponies have right of way over vehicles on New Forest roads?

The New Forest became Sherwood Forest in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starring Kevin Costner.

The New Forest is the only place in Britain where the wild gladiolus grows.

Alice Hargreaves, was the inspiration for Alice in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), she is buried at Lyndhurst Church of St Michael and All Angels, in The New Forest.

Heathland found in the New Forest is rarer worldwide than rainforest.

The New Forest National Park was created in March 2005 to conserve and enhance the natural beauty and to educate people of the importance of its special qualities.

Wow how gorgeous is The New Forest! So very different from the Secret Forest as there are no tropical plants but huge Oak and Beech trees. I was surprised to learn a large majority of the forest is covered in Heathland which has the most beautiful sprays of heather growing for miles. There were also no paddy melons or whip birds in site but I saw a lot of ponies!

I was also very surprised to see donkeys and pigs walking down the road as well! The animals seem to ‘rule the roost’ in The New Forest and cars are warned to drive very slowly as the animals are free to roam wherever they like. Oh I am loving my holiday so far and can’t wait to explore more of this amazing forest!

Visit to New Forest in England

I have been thinking about my visit to see my cousins in the UK. Here is my ‘things to remember’ list for my visit to the New Forest.
• A waterproof coat – it rains a lot in the UK!
• Gumboots – they call them Wellies in England!
• A bottle of water – walking can be thirsty work!
• Some food – like sandwiches and fruit to give me energy!
• A current first aid kit – just in case!
• A good map so I don’t get lost – the forest is a big place!
• A whistle – just in case I need to attract someone’s attention if I fall over!
• And an apple or two for the ponies-they love a little treat, so I’m told!
Oh and I will definitely tell my friends in the Secret Forest the exact route to my cousins home, you just can’t be too careful……..now, is there anything else I will need??????

A walk in the Rainforest

I just came back from a wonderful stroll, I love nothing better than going for a walk in the rainforest each day. The Secret Forest is part of the rainforest in Northern Australia and that means we have amazing animals that you won’t find in any other rainforests in the world. Holiday in UK

Good Morning everyone. I am thrilled to bits to tell you my news. I am planning to visit my cousins in the United Kingdom (UK) forests in March!

Windermere’s birthday is on the 12th March so I will leave just after that! I have started to write out my list of things I will need to take with me. If you can think of anything let me know. Have a fabulous day!

Secret Forest Garden Cakes

There was such a buzz in the Secret Forest in the lead up to Christmas. The whole forest seemed to really join in the Christmas spirit. When I listened to the green tree frogs it sounded like they were croaking out ‘jingle bells’ and ‘Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer’. Even the catbirds nest looked so Christmasy, I am sure they wanted their newborns to be born in a beautiful decorated Christmas nest!

One of my favourites things that happens at this time of the year is the christmas beetles come to visit, their colours are so vibrant. I have lots of wonderful memories from Christmas and I hope you do too!
